Board Games

Request from: Amy Darnell – 4th and 5th Grades – Emmons Elementary School

I would like to begin a “gamers” club for 4th-5th grade students. I believe that students need more time to play. I have very few games to get a club started, so I would use the donation to purchase board games for the club.

Land of Stories Book 2 Classroom Set

Request from: Jordan Bodnar – 5th Grade – Twin Branch Elementary School

My students have become infatuated with the series The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer. I read them each year and they are so popular that the library seldom has them in stock. I’d use these books to do class novel studies and read alongs while I read the books aloud. I have a set of book 1 already and they are almost all currently in use.

Presentation Boards for Science Fair

Request from: Cassidy Richard & Dan Rancourt 7th & 8th Grade – John Young Middle School

For our annual science fair, students have to design, conduct, and report on an experiment to test a question that is interesting to them. We have them assemble their final presentations on a trifold board for an easy and consistent display of information. Each year, more and more students have trouble financing the purchase of this board, so we like to have an ample amount on-hand to ensure that a lack of materials won’t hamper the students’ ability to create their presentation.

Computer Science Honor Society Elementary Outreach

Request from: Melissa Johnson – High School Math/Computer Science (Honor Society Sponsor)

The Computer Science Honor Society would like to introduce micro: bits to SCM elementary schools; we aim to increase literacy in computer science and spark a lifelong passion for STEM fields.

This hands-on, minds-on learning experiences will help to engage young minds and help bridge the gap between those who have and those who do not.

Through our microbit workshops, students will: Develop Practical Skills: Build interactive projects that demonstrate the application of computer science principles in real-world scenarios.

Enhance Problem-Solving Abilities: Engage in coding challenges and experiments that promote logical reasoning and creative problem-solving. cultivate STEM interest

Discover the transformative potential of technology and explore diverse career pathways in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

The Society members plan to go to the classroom at each elementary school and teach students about microbits (and other aspects of computer science). We will be there to help teachers that may not have the opportunity to learn how this technology works.

We believe that investing in microbits is an investment in the future of our students. By providing them with accessible and engaging computer science education, we are equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world. We are confident that this initiative will have a significant and lasting impact on the SCM community.

This $200 will buy one 10-Microbit kit. (currently on amazon for $218).  Ultimately, we would like a class set, so every student can touch the technology and be a part of the lesson, instead of sharing, but you have to start somewhere.
